Magnetic periodic table

A magnetic periodic table is an easy, but impressive DIY gift, especially if the recipient is a chemistry buff. This magnetic periodic table of elements can also double as a cool way to store spices, jewelry or other light-weight items.

Levitating speakers

This globe shaped speaker uses magnetic levitation technology to float in the air while you listen to your tunes. If you don’t have the extra cash to splurge on a levitating speaker, you can also make your own custom set of speakers with some basic instructions.

Ferrofluid kit

Ferrofluid is an intriguing substance. It is a liquid that has the magnetic properties of some metals, and you can do some pretty neat tricks and experiments with it. You can grab one of our ferrofluid kits and neodymium magnets and watch as the ferrofluid spikes along invisible magnetic field lines.

Magnetic putty

Magnetic putty is similar to ferrofluid, but it is thicker, hence the ‘putty’ name. Putty is also malleable and forms around a shape. Magnetic putty does the same, only it seems to move on its own because of magnetism. It has ferrous pieces dispersed within it that cause it to be drawn to a high powered magnet.

Science quote magnets

For an inexpensive DIY gift, take some quotes from your gift recipient’s favorite scientists and make a geeky set of fridge magnets. An easy way to make fridge magnets is with some Mod Podge, paper, glass pebbles and magnets. Glue the quotes to the back of the pebble, let it dry, then attach a magnet to the back, and wrap it up.

Hoverboard

This one may not be easy to obtain. It cost around $10K, and that is if you make the waiting list. However, this real hoverboard that uses magnets to levitate is still pretty cool whether or not you’re a science buff.
